The United Nations Security Council has approved new sanctions on North Korea in relation to the nuclear test of Sept. 3. The measures ended up being weaker than what the United States had originally requested, due to the compromises needed to guarantee support from Russia and China, which agreed to put additional pressure on the isolated nation, but have rejected the notion that the crisis can be resolved with threats.

The new sanctions block imports of liquid natural gas and condensate, limit oil imports, block textile exports and prohibit new work permits for North Korean workers abroad. Not included were the total oil embargo called for by the U.S. and a naval blockade of North Korea’s ships.

U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Nikki Haley was more conciliatory than usual, saying that “North Korea has not yet passed the point of no return.” She also stressed the “strong relationship” between Donald Trump and Xi Jinping that allowed the resolution to be adopted.
